Figure 73 introduces a new face to the family – Manchester-bread and now Berlin-based Setaoc Mass. After recently launching his own imprint SK_Eleven and putting out several releases that already tread in Figure’s lineage of modern, high-precision techno, the label is thrilled to get this promising new artist on board.
The five-tracker shows Setaoc Mass at his most versatile yet and clearly displays the producer’s talent for constructing both strong atmosphere as well as sheer dance-floor effectiveness.
Opener Mueh is a beatless brooding tool, endlessly building upon an eery SciFi-suspense. Far less reluctant and quick to up the tempo is Solo (Part One), contrasting fierce machinery against a crystalline melody that comes sprinkling from the stars above.
On the flipside Solo (Part Two) departs from the relentless thud of its predecessor, instead opting for an oldschool electro-pattern but keeping things far out in the orbit with absorbing emotive strings. Muffled Planet Earth only trickles through the lunar mist before the bellowing horns of Numb ferociously close out the EP.
With a statement this cohesive yet well rounded, Setaoc Mass ups his game considerably and proves himself a perfect addition to the international Figure stable.

Some simple but effective rolling tech-house grooves on this single-track release from Subinstinct Records, a German label whose first TIWWD appearance this is tonight.

Doesn’t Matter takes a textbook chunky tech-house rhythm, adds a few rave-y synth stabs here and there and tops the lot with a familiar-sounding snatch of preacherman-style vox (“I don’t know if everybody understands what that feels like… no matter what you been through or where you been, he’s always there”). And that’s it, basically.

It’s not the most original or innovative track to be released this week, admittedly. But it’s got energy to spare and will move bodies on dancefloors without a doubt, so job done, I’d say.

To The Underground Vol.6 kick starts with JJ Mullor & Toni Carrillo’s “Yeah“. An uplifting tech house beast, that features a rolling bassline, which was constructed to take dance floors by storm. The smooth female vocal snippets and the tight groove programming are keeping things moving forward in a fun way.

Next up is Joe Mesmar’s dark “I Feel So Weak”. This prime time techno weapon consists of the perfect late night vibes: Pitched down vocals, a growling bassline and moody pads.

Slovenia’s vibrant duo Alex Long & Stanny Abram take us on an expedition. Haunting melodic bits & pieces and a thick minimal techno groove are the foundation for “Heat”.

Crunchy sounds float throughout hight-tech percussions, while the rough pads provide the right amount of energy. Luigi Gori & Anis Hachemi also manage to playfully work stirring vocals into their slick arrangement. Their “Just One” composition is the perfect mood setter.

The striking feature of Alex Ranerro’s “Shelter” is it’s constantly morphing groove and enormous bassline that support the engaging vocal particles in the most stylish way. Monstrous drops and tight pads make this a peak-time sure shot!

Rodrik is completing this fine collection of quality electronic music. His “Trece” is all about the distinct and profound melody. It leads the way through a wide field of delay-filled sounds and temperamental snare builds.

“First of all, I never talk about the music itself,” he says from a youth hostel in Calgary. “It’s borderline sacrilegious to talk about the grooves. They have a language all their own, the grooves do. I just birth them and send them out into the world to make others happy. And that’s what makes me happy, and that’s what makes you happy.”
