What happens when scales and patterns of contradicting emotional imprints combine?
 When light and darkness, bitter and sweet, frost and blaze collide? Those are the questions that Johannes Heil chooses to address on his upcoming album, opening up a vast grey-scaled area for the listener to traverse with techno as a blindfold.

‘Black Light’ sees the German techno mainstay return to the album format for an intimate ten track odyssey of close-curtained introspection. Heil chooses the words of fellow futurist Nikola Tesla to set the stage of the Black Light story: “Black is the true face of Light, only we do not see this”. Track names are dropped in favor of a chronology of scenes, better adapted to the seemingly polar opposition of the forces that the Figure and Cocoon regular conjures throughout the album.

Everything that we perceive is processed and set into relation with past memories, digested emotions and iron-branded impressions. Battling the current, Johannes Heil chooses to challenge certitudes by forcing us out of our comfort zones into the absence of light. If the pictures painted on ‘Black Light’ are dark, they are also far from monochromatic. The machine-driven sonic prism acts both as the heavy cloud and the burst of light that shoots through to guide us. It’s the aggressor and the victim, the clenched teeth and the jubilant, the paranoia and the sanity of the mind. It’s pure heads-down driving techno with volumes of grandiose.

Provoking our senses, extending his art onto our personal canvases, the Exile boss gives the listener the freedom to interpret the emotional context of each piece, to write the scripts of the individual scenes. The impression that ‘Black Light’ leaves upon first listen testifies that 20 years down the road, Johannes Heil shows no sign of slowing down.

Lacing each track with pads and tantalising hook lines, Capuano’s tracks fire on all cylinders with good use of vocals and drum rhythms. We’ve waited exactly one year for the return of Wigbert to the SCI+TEC fold and with ‘Dancing In The Dark Room’, his latest EP for the label, our anticipation has been rewarded with, in our opinion, his finest work to date.

Having already explored many musical paths in his career, Wigbert’s current sound is an impressive amalgamation of all that has come before, matched with a tougher, more driving dancefloor delivery. ‘Dancing In The Dark Room’ sees Wigbert roll out moody yet groovy synth work on the opening title track before shocking us with his devestating broken beats on ‘No Plan’. A track that confirms quite the opposite.

Next up is the terrifying ‘Tinnitus’, a mind-melting mosquito of a track that is set to cause much late night mayhem. Finally, and thankfully for our eardrums, Wigbert eases us to a close with a far more soothing number in the form of the liquid delight that is Sunday Mood.

We kick off tonight with an excellent deep house slab from Italy’s Raw Trax Records.

Never Again is up first, a tracky instrumental that’s all muted-but-pounding drums, muffled bass and sparkling hi-hats. But it’s the title track, which follows, that’s the standout – six minutes and 30 seconds of surging, pulsing deep/prog goodness underpinned by a warm, sonorous b-line and topped with staccato space-disco synths. One to lose yourself in on 5am dancefloors and no mistake, guv’nor.

The more contemplative Strange Thoughts, with its gentle piano chords, Spanish guitar and stuttering, almost fractured beats, completes the EP.

Moving into tech-house territory now and in whose company better to do so than the Grandaddy himself, Mr Terry Francis?

In its Original form, Gasworks sports tuff kicks, ominous synth drones and a dark bassline that’s almost junglistic in its intensity. Distorted, undiscernible vocal samples and industrial-style synth FX add to the general tripped-out, slightly disturbing atmosphere… eyes down now, people! It’s accompanied by a brace of remixes – Darren Roach gives us a  a smoothed-out, slightly housier rub while Joseph S Joyce heads in the opposite direction, stripping things back to an almost minimal degree. Completing the EP is Intastars, a mid-paced, tribal-leaning chugger with sampled movie dialogue and a deceptively funky-assed bassline.

All good, but it’s Francis’s original of the title track that makes this truly essential.

Messrs Francis and Joyce took us into dark, small-hours dancefloor territory (see below) and we stay there for tonight’s final review with this latest offering from Manchester’s Subplot Records.

La Risole itself is an eyes-down rolling groove sitting somewhere between tech-house and minimal, and comes laden with fragments of barely-there spoken male vox and all manner of trippy FX. A remix from Gesus Lpz takes us down a slightly (but only slightly) darker/harder route, while completing the EP is Manatale, which underpins twitchy, glitchy top-end percussion and FX with some seriously heavyweight bass drops.

Some very now-sounding, bass-y house grooves on this two-tracker from Form & Function.

On the A, What You Done starts with clipped vocal snippets and a snaking electro-ish synth line, which are soon joined by throbbing synth-bass, tough kicks and chopped n’ looped R&B vox, the end result that keep an already warmed-up floor moving nicely. It’s the B’s Relax that stands out for yours truly, a more lo-slung affair with a sleazoid bassline, almost rave-y synth chords and a looped, G-house-ish “I said baby it’s time to relax” male vocal.

My Favorite Robot very much prizes quality over quantity, and so it is that they offer up their carefully chosen autumn vinyl release, namely another landmark EP from key label artist Eric Volta. Fleshing out his killer originals are remixes from Swiss star Deetron and Volta as Voltaeric.

Volta is a synth whizz who crafts cinematic, epic, emotive music for this label as well as No.19 Music. He has emerged as a real star in the last year or so and is able to marry dance floor clout with a truly cerebral sense of musical storytelling.

It’s that kind of musical narrative that he offers up here to great effect with an EP which starts off with a scene-setting recording of some frightened breathing and a torturous synth line that grows unbearably loud then dissolves to a post apocalyptic hum. It’s unsettling but really gets your attention before ‘Until I Dissolve’ drops, an absorbing brew of searching sci-fi synths, wood block hits and thick melodic gurgles. A spoken word vocal muses up top and the result is a truly dark and futuristic groove.

‘Heartbeat II: Cry’ is two minutes of excellently evocative sound design, pained synth lines and cosmic energy that really makes this EP feel like a story, then we have ‘Deliquesce’, a Vangelis like prog track rich with reflective chords and rippling melodies that really tugs at the heartstrings.

Deetron—a real house and techno specialist who has proven himself in both EP and LP format over the years—remixes this one into a more slow burning but all consuming main room track with bold drones and glassy melodies. He also offers up a beatless dub that is equally engaging as it grows ever more manic. Finally Volta remixes his own ‘Until I Dissolve’ into a whacked out, synth laden techno cut that is brilliantly dark and weird.

Few EPs feel like as fully realised a sound world as this. Even more impressive is that Volta never loses sight of a dance floor groove whilst telling his compelling synth based stories.
