Javier Penna Cristian Poow Illusion Dbeatzion RecordsMoving into more uptempo house territory, here we have a cheeky little number from Argentina’s Dbeatzion Records.

Illusion sees label boss Cristian Poow teaming up with Javier Penna for a remake of/homage to Imagination’s 80s boogie classic Just An Illusion that sits somewhere between deep house and nu-disco, and that also sports a nagging keys riff that doesn’t half remind me of the riff from 2 In A Room’s 90s stomper El Trago. It’s presented in simple Club and Radio mixes, so not much more to tell you, really.

Not the most groundbreaking of cuts, admittedly, but it’ll work on the floor without a doubt.

Hamza, Audio Units & Omanu Space Dust DeepWit RecordingsMore quality deep house vibes here, coming from those ever-reliable providers of such, Denmark’s DeepWit Recordings.

Four mixes of Space Dust to choose from. The original’s a dreamaway late-night throbber with female vocal snips, rolling drums, warm percussion, space-y synths (of course) and just a hint of Detroit-t synth-strings in the mid-section. First up to to the remix plate is Finest Wear, who gives us a more floor-friendly rub, though you’d still be talking early doors or very late play. Pat Lezizmo also ups the tempo slightly while retaining more of the Original’s ‘lost in space’ feel, while finally Niclas With Attitude comes with a stripped-back, slightly techier pass.

To be honest, thought, the differences between the mixes here are fairly minor – this is a ‘proper’ deep house bomb whichever way you slice it!

Addex Kultural Remixes Limitation MusicWe kick off in deep house territory tonight with this three-track EP from Romanian producer Addex, coming on Bucharest’s Limitation Music label.

What’s on offer – as the title subtly suggests! – are new mixes of tracks from the previously released Kultural EP. First we get a Dub of Kultural itself, quite a laidback affair that’d work in warm-up sets or for post-club/Sunday afternoon listening. Then we head off to the dancefloor in the company of Santiago Santamaria, who brings us a gorgeous unhurried, deep garage-tinged rub of Alabama Slammer, before Distant Relatives JHB’s rub of Kultural plays us out on a dreamy, late-night note.

All good stuff here, but it’s Santamaria’s mix of Alabama Slammer that’s the killer.

Jon Lee Making Me It! EP Different AttitudesYet more fine house grooves here, these ones coming from Different Attitudes and newcomer Jon Lee.

Just the two tracks to choose from. On the A, Making Me It! itself rocks a pulsing synth/bass riff that’s not a little reminiscent of Kerri’s Ride The Storm, pairing it with simple shuffling beats and snippets of garage-y fem vox. Flip it over and you’ll find Will I See You Tonight, a more strutty but densely layered houser with just the faintest hint of prog to some of the synth sounds.

Good stuff as ever from Different Attitudes, with Making Me It! my pick of the two.

Moniker Give It Up Arcade PonyA three-tracker here from Punx Soundcheck’s Arcade Pony imprint and rising Aussie producer Moniker.

The title track is a now-sounding bass-y houser with bags on energy and attitude-y fem vox… it’ll work on younger floors for sure, but TBH it’s the other two cuts that are working better for me. House Music Was Born takes a hefty chunk of the declarin’ vocal from – well, I don’t need to tell you were from, surely? – and places it atop a stuttering, bouncy backdrop of ruff-edged bass, shimmering synth FX and no-nonsense 4/4s, while Brave Noise’s remix of Give It Up smooths out the original’s indie-dance/punk-funk edges, adds some classic diva wails and takes us into eyes-down 3am territory.

It’s the latter that takes the gold for me, but House Music Was Born is good too and sure to raise a smile…

Altered Perception Engage/Creep Plush RecordingsOkay, last one for tonight so let’s flip the script before we dip with some deep, dark D&B vibes courtesy of the ever-checkable Plush Recordings.

Alchemic Breaks boss Altered Perception is the man at the controls, serving up two serious dancefloor bullets your Nan probably wouldn’t like much. On the A, Engage is packed full of the kind of ominous, industrial sounds you find in the deepest of techno and minimal, albeit in this instance they’re married to rollin’ techy beats and a dark, warping main synth hook. Over on the B, meanwhile, Creep has a similar sound palette but fiercer drums – not much more I can tell you, really.

Two to reach for when you want to turn the dark up!

Shaheer Williams ft Michael Watford Faith Universe MediaA complete change of pace now as London’s Universe Media bring us a fine slice of gospel-flavoured garage/soulful house from former Ruffneck man Shaheer Williams.

Three mixes of Faith to choose from. On the Soul Groove Mix, Watford’s legendary tonsils are in action atop an insistent piano riff, hip-swayin’ beats and, later on, some ker-razy parping Hammond action. David Anthony ups the tempo a little on his Gospel Mix, which has BVs from Lisa Millett, no less, and which is vaguely reminiscent of Praise Cats’ classic Shined On Me. And then finally another scene stalwart, Ricky Morrison, gives us a Klub Dub Vox mix which adopts a slightly more contemporary, tech-tinged tone while keeping Watford’s vocal intact.

If you’re fiending for uplifting, trad-style soulful vibes that are guaranteed devoid of both wish and wash, you’ll find ‘em right here.

L.T.D EP Vol 2 Soul TraderWe ended last night in drum & bass territory, so let’s pick up there again tonight with this pleasingly varied V/A sampler from West London’s fledgling Soul Trader label.

Spearhead Records boss BCee is up first with the soulfully inclined liquid roller Thought I Knew, which sports melancholy strings, gently tinkling ivories and a looping female “I thought I knew you” vocal. HLZ’s Broken Lights sits somewhere between liquid and deep/minimal D&B with its cavernous bass drops, steppy beats and female vocal wails, while McLeod’s Stolen Kisses operates in similar territory but with more frenetic rolling beats. Salaryman’s more strident In The Stories then nudges towards ‘stadium’ territory, before the Simplification & Translate remix of Random Movement’s Chop Shop Burn plays us out on a mellower note once more, albeit when that bass drops you’ll know about it!

It’s the BCee and HLZ tracks I’d head for first, personally, but the range on offer makes this a package that should have broad appeal.

No 590 EP NIte GroovesAnother excellent addition to Nite Groove’s ‘number’ series of EPs here.

No stranger to this blog, Matt McLarrie gets the ball rolling with Jazz Lemonade, a superb slice of garage-leaning deep house with a warm, fluid bassline, soaring sax, insistent piano stabs and spoken “jazz!” vox. Misty’s Circus Horns is a more driving house cut with a lolloping main synth/bass riff, tribal-tinged drums and a big, dramatic breakdown in the middle, while completing the EP is Because Of You from Severin Borer, a more contemplative, slow-burning houser with some pleasingly hefty bass throb and a blissed-out, almost Balearic feel in places.

All solid stuff, but it’s Jazz Lemonade that makes this EP essential.

Robot Needs Oil Little Jack Sonic Soul RecordsDon’t get me wrong, I like the three records I just told you about below a lot, or they wouldn’t be here. But this… we’re definitely ending on a high note tonight because this is a little slice of deep house heaven.

In its Original form, Little Jack is a deep, garage-y beauty with a strong jazz flava to its mournful trumpets, understated two-chord piano hook, floaty sax and distinctive near-scat “It’s just a little funky jive” vocal. As if that wasn’t enough, you then get a trio of remixes from what’s pretty much a TIWWD dream team line-up of Rishi K, Harold Heath and Tony S. Harold adds just a hint of disco/funk, Rishi beefs up the kicks a little and adds subtle M1 sounds as well as some frankly superb live piano licks, while Tony strips things back for the 3am floors.

Like I said: a little slice of deep house heaven. Go seek!
