Cologne’s finest Rafael Da Cruz is back for his second Compost Black Label after his debut last year with „Renaissance“.
Dark and floating on „Rex“ this time, with an incredible remix by Edgar Peng and an epic version from Andre Lodemann, that earned a lot of love from guys like Âme, Dixon, Sandrino and more over the last couple of weeks.

2015 was a good one for Rafael Da Cruz. He toured through South America, Thailand, India and Europe and played legendary spots like D-Edge, Warung and Watergate. With “Right To Love” he runs an own night in Cologne since almost three years in the well known and undisputed best club in town called Gewölbe. The story continues and this chapter is called „Rex“.

Ever since the debut, “Communication EP” which also marked our 50th release, Alexander Lay-Far has a special place in the Local Talk family. Since then things have been going well with plenty more releases, tours, the launch of his label In-Beat-Ween Music plus a new full length album done. With so much things on the go we’re of course very happy to welcome Lay-Far back and with him this time, two UK house legends the needs little introduction, Ashley Beedle and Darren Morris. Together the trio produced an EP that embraces the charms of both disco and house and we think it hits on every level. The A-side is dedicated to “Doctor Feelgood”, which is just as the name suggest, a delicious disco house cut that will make you feel good. Extra bonus points for the wonky bassline. On the flip, there’s two versions of Slope. The first one is an easy-breezy number built around jazzy drums, warm chords to catch your breath for a minute or two,lovers of rhodes should lend the track an extra ear, it’s pure bliss. After those 5 minutes and 14 seconds has ended Lay-Far steps into the remix arena, turns up the tempo and sends the track straight to the dance floor. No need to fiddle around to much, he just sprinkles some extra touches of Lay-Far magic to the original and voilà, it’s done.

Four mixes to choose from. In its Original form, Slight Of Sound is all crisp beats, fat n’ funky bassline, gently tinkling ivories and cut-up, garage-y vox – a deep house jam in the finest west coast tradition, in fact. Analog Trip’s remix is stripped-back, dubby and small hours-friendly, deepAlexander’s is similarly late-night but brings the vocal to the fore, while Pano Manara takes us into headnoddin’, sofa-surfin’ territory.

Class in a glass all round, so go seek!

Mike Mac & Mark Dickson Nakoda EP Arch44 MusicSome deep tech-house grooves to kick us off tonight courtesy of UK label Arch44 Music.

In its Original form, Nakoda itself is a rolling, 3am kinda groove, with tribal-tinged beats, Middle Eastern-sounding vocal wails and sampled “Did anyone come at you yet… did anyone get to you yet?” spoken male vox. Alex Maxwell’s remix doesn’t flip the script massively but is a little less dark and claustrophobic, while Nunzio Roma’s BK Bounce Remix is a little housier and adds piano. Completing the package is It’s Alright, another chuggy lil’ roller with a female voice intoning the title.

Not picking a fave here – this is good stuff all round!

Rennie Foster With Abandon RF TraxEarlier this week, Canadian house and techno producer Rennie Foster got in touch and sent me a bundle of his recent productions. They were landing a little bit late but after he’d gone to all the trouble, it seemed churlish not to give the guy a shout!

Pick of the crop for me was this cut on his own RF Trax, which blends techno and jazz/soul influences to great effect. In its Original form, With Abandon strews scat fem vox liberally over driving beats, warping synth/organ chords and various tripped-out FX, the end result being a track that doesn’t sound like much else out there and is sure to prick up ears on the dancefloor.  Antwon Faulkner’s remix is a touch (tech) housier, Stephen Brown does the glitch techno thing while Cloudmaster Weed takes us into wonked-out, beatdown territory.

It’s the Original and Faulkner remixes I’d head for first.

Luthia Ego EP Innocent Music DeepTo play us out tonight, as the witching hour approaches and the working week beckons, some sterling deep techno/minimal vibes from those ever-reliable providers of the same, Innocent Music Deep.

Ego itself is up first, a dubby, house-y cut with a vocal that sounds like Mr Spock describing his first acid trip. Bajka, which follows, is an eight-minute slow-burner that comes on like a proggy take on minimal, and that’s got ‘set opener’ written all over it. And then finally there’s Misli with its tinny rave beats, deceptively funky synth bassline and string of cavernous, spangled breakdowns.

Definitely nothing here you could play at a wedding. But if it’s late-night smoking tackle you’re after…

Soul Equation After Dark EP Artefact RecordsA pleasingly varied three-tracker here from Soul Equation, who’s based in the northwest of England.

After Dark itself is up first, which sits somewhere between laidback deep house and nu-disco, and foregrounds soaring, analogue-sounding synths. Back To Mine is more yer straight-up deep house jam, with nagging chords, tuff-but-muted 4/4s, spacey synths and spoken “don’t stop” vox. And then finally there’s Morning Calling which heads in the other direction, being a slice of druggy, slo-mo disco with some nice fat, squelchy 80s-style analogue synth-bass.

Back To Mine stands out for me, but it’s all good as they say and the variety on offer is testament to Soul Equation’s versatility, suggesting we’ll be hearing much more from this relative newcomer.
